Antidisestablishmentarianism.
(can you feel a long blog coming?) ;]
One of my favorite words.
My thoughts on religion in school is mixed.
I think the word "God" should be universal.
Though one person's God may be different than another, the term "God" should apply to all.
In one case a school was sued for saying prayer before a football game.
This has gone on for a long time and is somewhat of a tradition.
Unless you are an atheist, this should not be offensive.
Whether it be the Christian God or the Muslim God, pray to your own.
As far as atheists go, if you do not have the power to ignore a prayer or something of that nature, you should not be at the event.
During school, if you are learning about the puritans, you should also learn equal amounts about the Diez people in the past. The men who asked for answers and facts and not just faith. The intelligent people of the world should not be shunned from the history books because their opinion was not socially acceptable.
Although I fell this way, being agnostic myself, I am more than happy to listen to a Christian's opinions. But I have seen from past experience that they are not willing to listen to my own or anyone who believes like myself. I think they are afraid. Afraid that something said may persuade them to be more open minded, stray from their faith a little. And even though that my not be my intentions, having an opinion listened to is a right I think.
I really am at a draw. Opening the classroom up for a religious debate could end badly. But which is the lesser of two evils? Doing something that might rustle a few feathers? Or not doing so to avoid conflict?
To avoid critisism...
Do nothing.
Say nothing.
Be nothing.
